Early Life

Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872 as the only son to John Calvin Coolidge and Victoria Moor Coolidge

Coolidge graduated Amherst College  and would begin practicing law in 1897

He would marry Anna Goodhue, who was a teacher at the Clarke Institute for the deaf, in 1905 and they would have two sons

Before the Presidency

While he was still the Governor of Massachusetts, Coolidge became famous for crushing the Boston Police Strike of 1919, using the National Guard to do so.

In his statement against reinstating police officers who had been fired for striking Coolidge said, “There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime.” His stance against labor unions would put him onto the Republican ticket in the 1920 election as Harding’s Vice-Presidential running mate.

How he became President

Calvin Coolidge was the 30th president of the United States. Preceded by the 29th president Warren G. Harding who had a heart attack in 1923, after which Calvin Coolidge, then Vice-President, was sworn in by the light of a kerosene lamp in his bedroom.

His father,  who was a notary public, administered the Oath of Office while Coolidge placed his hand on their family Bible

So, at 2:47 a.m. on August 3rd, 1923, Calvin Coolidge officially became the 30th president of the United States.

During the Presidency

During Coolidge’s Presidency he managed to bring respect back to the Presidency after inheriting President Harding’s scandal. Coolidge convinced the American people the presidency could be trusted

During the 1924 Republican Convention Coolidge ran virtually unopposed, with the slogan “Keep Cool with Coolidge” he gained 54% of the popular vote.

Coolidge’s Inaugural Address was the first to be broadcast on national radio

Reputation

Calvin Coolidge is famous for being mostly quiet but well-spoken, even having the nickname “Silent Cal”.

A story that exemplifies this is when Coolidge was at a dinner party and a woman sitting next to him said, “You must talk to me, Mr. President. I made a bet today that I could get more than two words out of you.” and Coolidge replied, “You Lose.”

He was also known for being very business-oriented and believed in the bolstering of American industry, even changing the staff of the FTC to help bolster business instead 0f policing its practices.

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Oliver Wendell Holms, commented on Coolidge’s presidency saying, “While I don’t expect anything very astonishing from [Coolidge] I don’t want anything very astonishing.”

Later Life

In 1928 Calvin Coolidge announced simply, “I do not choose to run,” he decided to return to Northampton instead.

While in retirement he wrote a syndicated newspaper column, a few magazine articles, and an autobiography

Death

So, less than four years after leaving the white house, Calvin Coolidge died of a heart attack.

He was survived by his wife, Grace Coolidge. She lived another 24 years and during that time she worked for the needs of the hearing-impaired
